One year since I said yes

After we had been dating for a couple of months it was clear to both of us that we were interested in tying the knot. But we couldn’t for real start preparing the wedding – that we had already set a date for – until we were officially engaged.

So, cards were on the table… just needed to do the proposal to make it official. But Marcus took his time. He of course wanted to plan it out and choose the most romantic spot in all of Stockholm. I had already told him when he sneakily touched on the subject, that I didn’t want a big fancy ring. I wanted something I could wear still while “changing diapers and doing dishes”, so he didn’t have to save up for months or spend days looking for the right one. So what was the hold up??

So! October 20th Marcus was staying at our house in Denmark visiting. I had a shift at the restaurant that night, so Marcus volunteered to walk me to work, cause he needed to run and get something at the store real quick anyway, he said. I just said “okay!” and we went.

I got off work late. Past 11pm. I was expecting Marcus to pick me up but was disappointed to find my mom waiting in the car. We drove home, I was a little frustrated, asking if she’d told Marcus she’d left, cause he was supposed to pick me up! When we got home I walked straight for the front door and hurried inside. My mom called me back out, giggling. She jerked her head in the direction of the back yard and I noticed a few candles forming a sort of path around the corner of the house. My mom went in the house, still giggling and suddenly it hit me!

I got a little nervous, but forced myself to start walking. I suddenly became aware of my dirty waitress polo and messy ponytail. As a turned the corner I saw a path of candles leading up to a big circle of torches under our big chestnut. In the middle of the circle stood Marcus looking cutely tense with a big bouquet of red roses. I shakily walked up to him (now it seems so silly that we both got so uneasy!). He gave me this long perfect speech about how much he loved me and why he wanted to spend his life with me.

After giving me the flowers he knelt down and took out this perfect little golden ring – his sweet grandparents had offered him their engagement rings – and asked me to marry him. I said ‘yes’, but so quietly and squeaky that he had to ask if I’d answered yet (:

We took a few minutes hugging each other and enjoying the moment before going inside where my family were waiting with cake. It was absolutely perfect! Secluded, private, under the stars in the back yard of my parents house that I was about to leave.

I just looked up and said “Honey, thank you for asking me to marry you” to which Marcus responded, “Of course..!” and then continued chopping up lettuce for dinner. I love that man!
